Title: Where is everyone?
Post by: viperboy0612 on March 01, 2012, 09:07:54 AM MT
I just started playing a couple of days ago and I am loving this game thus far.  The only downside is I have no one to play it.  I convinced 2 of my roommates to play and they also like the game.  I would be interested in supporting this game by buying the character packs, but I can't get myself to if I won't be able to use it against human players.  I am signed in pretty often throughout the day keeping an eye out for players, but there are barely any.  It's almost like a ghost town.  What happened?

That's a great question, and one that deeply perplexes me. Hero Mages is one of the few games out there that offers a combination of turn-based tactics and strategic card play- and it's got awesome multiplayer support for pretty much any device. Where are the players, indeed. It's the age old circle problem: players don't come because they hear no one is playing, no one plays because nobody comes.

I struggle a lot with this- I do my best as a developer to create all the features everyone asks and build a solid and stable game that's fun as can be to play. Player support is very important to Hero Mages- I rely on the players to promote the game just as much as you rely on me to keep developing. That's why I appreciate your post, viperboy. Getting your friends online to play is the first step. If each player brings even one or two additional friends to the game, our community will grow quickly, and, before long, it will be bustling with tons of opponents to battle against.

What other ways can players help bring more friends onboard? Write awesome feedback in the marketplace., post recommendations on other forums, create Youtube videos proclaiming your love of Hero Mages to the world? I'm eager to hear your ideas and support in anyway that I can.

Thanks for the quick response! I'll be sure to keep telling friends about it and trying to get the word out.  Hopefully the community can grow a little bit more.

I have an idea to get more traffic.  Maybe you can partner up with another site.  Have you ever heard of boardgamearena.com?  They have a lot of board games on their site and a pretty steady stream of players.  Not sure what you can offer in return because I don't know the business side of websites/in-browser gaming, but just an idea floating around.  I feel that if you google board games online, a lot of people get redirected to boardgamearena since that is one of the best places to play online board games.

That's a worthy suggestion! I'll look into it.

I am new too, and was wondering the same thing.

I am going to start pushing HM at my DDO guild site (here (https://calamitousguild.forumotion.com/)).  Right now it is word of mouth, but when I get a chance, I will write a nice promo.  I'm currently on a beta Android version, so I don't know if it will work with others, but when I am done with some pressing matters, I will give it a try.  I may move to the desktop while learning, but I like it on the tablet because I can play when I'm hurting and sitting at the big system is just too much.

I agree, this game is awesome!  I love strategy - this is exactly what I was looking for when I went looking -  but right now I am only beating the AI (when I get a chance to play) about 50% of the time, and that is against a single opponent and using only two arenas!  I have a lot to learn, still.

I feel like my learning will be stymied until I can play against real people.

I am on every now and again, though it is rare as I have just obtained a new job in middle of Indiana and have been busy moving to and getting prepared there.

Well since my brother mentioned it to me, I'll be checking in now and then too. I like the changes Ross, they confused me at first but it looks good.

1 change I do not like is the text up top that states what is being done. If I didn't know every spell/ability/attack sound and animation by heart I would be so lost what that mage just casted, especially since the animation is so fast you don't get much time on the right side to see it.

From my understanding, YES!  That's one of the beauties of this system and one of the items Ross works very hard to make happen.  If I am wrong, my apologizes in advance.  Someone who has been around longer will have to confirm this, but I'm 95% positive it is transparent to the OS.

Thanks for the reply mate, I just tried an online match but no luck. It says versions are not compatible, my android version is 1.7.1 and the pc version was 1.7.0. The guy in lobby said he's played from his pc against android users before, so I don't understand what the issue could be?  ???

Okay, I have just made a quick test and I was able to connect my Android phone (latest Silver app) with actual online Version. It was a little bit laggy (because of my slow phone connection here, I think) but it worked realy fine so far.  :D

Back to the topic I must say, it was mere chance I have found Hero Mages and I was looking for a game like this a long time. To offer a coop crossplatform multiplayer option was the best you could make, I think.
Well, I only have made some little games so I can't say much about Hero Mages. But I play P&P rpgs and board games (like Descent, you know) a long time now and if I can make a suggenstion: personalization.

No matter if you play a rpg, a ccg/tcg or a board game like Descent or Hero Quest, a player wants to identify with the hero he play. On Hero Mages I don't have this feeling, it's more like a nameless figure I have to move around the board. I don't know if it's possible to make on Hero Quest but it would be a great motivation if a player can say "this is *my* hero, I have fight so many battles with him".

Another nice have: Coop multiplayer campaigns. Combined with my first suggestion I could imagine a gameplay like this: A "tree of levels" (maps). Depending if the player win or lose the next map is chosen.
To look at personalization it would be possible mages get more spells, mana, life, etc. from map to map.

Kind regards,
Rial

Wow, I like this (though I have YET to play another human online - life's been hectic for me lately).

As far as personalization of the characters, I, myself, view this game as more like a detailed game of chess, where the pieces are impersonal.  But, maybe Ross could add custom cosmetics, would this make your favorite mage seem personal?  I don't know if this would be enough, though.

Found the problem with the different platforms, read this post: https://heromages.com/forums/index.php?topic=434.0 (https://heromages.com/forums/index.php?topic=434.0)

It looks like a patch was made to the Android version and now the versions don't match - now that this has been discovered, I'm sure it will be fixed soon.

Trasd, thanks for stepping up and answering this question: Yes, Hero Mages is cross-platform compatible. I made a mistake in temporarily "killing" this imcompatability with the last update on the "Gold" version. Fear not, I'll have a patch up in a day or two that fixes this problem as well as the other issues users have reported (most importantly the lock-out problem that happens when users join a game while host is editing options).

See my recently added notes here for more details: https://heromages.com/forums/index.php?topic=434.0 (https://heromages.com/forums/index.php?topic=434.0)

Character customization and coop campaign ideas sound great! I recommend you check out this thread for the "future road map" of where things are tentatively headed:

I am not sure if I brought this up previously, but I believe that most people who play multiplayer and against AIs are turned off by having to re-do the AIs every single time they set-up a new game. While the games does save the settings in terms of the room settings, the AI settings are not saved at all.

If I were to be playing a game with 7 AIs, I will have to continuously set up each one of them for every single game, which gets tedious if I were to be playing more than 3 games.

Just a thought.

Thats a really good point! So keep AI settings in memory between sessions? NP. Will add this to my list!

Welcome DaKilla! Glad to have you with us. Yes, you can create multiplayer games from iPad. Once you login to multiplayer, press the button that looks like a chess piece with a plus symbol. See atttached image.

I can delete your old account, reset your password, and even change the username on your new account. Let me know which you'd prefer.

@daproject

I figured it out. Your old account name has a space character at the end of it, so it's actually "dakilla "

Try logging in with this and see if it works. I had another user report similar problem. I will add a fix that checks to ensure trailing spaces are not included in user registration name.

I think adding campaigns and lvls, would turn this game yet in another countless browser rpg and it would take away only thing that makes this game special.

I agree with you Gorstak. The goal wouldn't be to change the existing strategic gameplay of Hero Mages, but expand in other ways that draw new players to D20Studios gaming!

yes but then all would play that rpg part and none would play original.

I think that's the part Ross is talking about NOT changing.

Hero Mages is a simple to learn, hard to master, turned based, strategy game played on a board - in affect, it is a sophisticated chess game with more options.  I don't see any way of successfully integrating a RGP type system, but then again, I'm not near as good as figuring out this sort of thing as many people.  I couldn't imagine campaigns in Stratego!

The only way I could see this working is to have a series of teams you must beat in an "open the next level" type of system, like Angry Bird's level unlocking - and I hate this type of game!  I usually remove them if I see locks over stuff (except Majesty: Fantasy Kingdom Sim, this is my only exception).

Plus, I think there are many other things that need to be done before changing the game; it's like Smart Phones, you can do everything on them except use them as a phone!  They should have gotten the basics working before they stated adding bells and whistles - same concept with Hero Mages, I think.

OK, I'm done with the soapbox, who wants it next?

Hi,
I've played your game and like it very much.It has been quite a while since I played regularly but I keep checking back to see how things are going.Everytime I come back there are virtually no players around to challenge as this thread points out.I have a suggestion but don't know how practical it would be...

What about making the game a sort of play by email type of affair where you got notified via your Iphone/Android/messanger or whatever once your opponent had taken their move?

I'm not saying this should be the only way to play but maybe an option to play realtime or Email games when you begin.I believe Heromages has the players and this could be a work around instead of trying to get them all in the same place at the same time.

Hi Jexstar,

The feature you're referring to is called "asynchronous gameplay" and you'll be happy to know that implementing this feature is among my top development priorities for the next version.

In addition to being able to play via email/one turn at a time, this could also be used as a notification system to get players in the lobby to meet up for challenges and "real-time" games.
