Feature Requests / Hero Mages User's Guide
June 19, 2012, 12:51:26 PM MT

I am at a point in working on the User's Guide where I need some help from the community!

Can some experienced players please check the "How to Play" section of the online guide for accuracy, especially the "Strategy Tips", "Hot Keys", etc?

Thanks

Suggestions & Comments / Pally vs Undead
May 11, 2012, 03:31:43 AM MT
In most of these games, a Paladin (or healer) has special divine blessings that give them power over undead monsters.  I thought it might be interesting to give the Pally in HM the option to use her healing ability to cause 1 HP of damage on the skeletons.  I don't believe this would significantly change the balance of the game since she still needs to use a card for this feature.  I just think this would add a little more flavor (really I just don't want Ross to have any time to rest! LOL).

Thoughts?

Suggestions & Comments / AI Forfeit
May 06, 2012, 09:29:38 PM MT
I'm pretty good at math, but one branch that has always escaped me is statistical analysis, so I may be off on this.

Playing against the AI, I ended up with just my Paladin against the AI Paladin.  The fight went on forever.  With only three 25% chances to hit each turn and each toon having the ability to heal one hit point each turn, there is a high chance the game could last forever (OK, so I'm being dramatic)!  But the game could theoretically last quite awhile.  It took me most of the last Harry Potter movie to finally win.

I suggest implementing some type of forfeit on the AI's part or implementing a draw (tie) option - possibly if neither opponent moves for twenty turns, or whatever.

Suggestions & Comments / Button Position Consistency
May 06, 2012, 02:53:22 PM MT
Many times, in-game, I do something I didn't mean to (ask die, I say this all the time in my training sessions) and I could never figure out why.  I think I finally got it; the accept and cancel button positions are not consistent!

If you select a toon and then decided to deselect it, you hit the deselect button , which happens to be in the same location where the accept button for a spell is positioned!

My suggestion is to ALWAYS put all accept-type buttons on one side and ALWAYS put cancel-type buttons on the other (I consider the Deselect Button a cancel-type button - maybe add some red color to cancel-type buttons and green to accept-type, too).  People are creatures of habit and when we get used to something, tend to do it without much thought.

Just say'n...

Suggestions & Comments / Implementing PM
May 06, 2012, 12:07:03 PM MT

I think, as a close knit community, we need a PM (Personal Message) system.  I find it is hit-and-miss to post a message and hope the person it was meant for happens to see it, not to mention having to publicly post personal communications if you need to tell someone something.  It's all to Facebook for me, and I don't Facebook - my business is my own and doesn't need to be documented for the wold to see and comment on (don't get me started!).

If it is possible and if Ross is willing to enable it, is there anyone strongly opposed to a PM system?

Bugs & Support / Fighter Mage
May 04, 2012, 12:26:22 AM MT
Ross, while playing against the AI on my Android, the enemy Fighter Mage, at the end of his turn, had himself tucked into a corner (3 wall tiles shaped like an 'L' at the top right of the Solace map).  The AI ended it's turn, then the Fighter Mage started turning about 180° left and right - over and over during my turn - and I could not select him at all.  As soon as I ended my turn, the Mage teleported twice.

I know I can look at the code and commands with the log, but I can find no way of saving it or I would have done that for you.  Sorry I don't have more information, but if you tell me how to save a log or something on the Android, I will be able to get it to you if this happens again.

Suggestions & Comments / Multiplayer Suggestions
April 18, 2012, 03:13:27 AM MT
Well, I finally took the multiplayer plunge and naturally got my butt kicked - thanks die!  No, but really die, thanks for taking the time to show me the ropes.

While playing, I did notice a few items I would like to see added or changed:

  • I am a slow reader (not so slow I can't read a message, though - keep reading) and also have a problem noticing chat, it is the same for all the games I play. Would there be a way to add an optional "ding" when someone enters a message?  Also, since I am a slow reader and don't notice the messages for a little while, could you make the messages stay up a little longer?
  • Display a game's spectators
  • Show die roll results somewhere on the screen as text (I am rerequesting this suggestions and saw that someone else requested it too)
  • Make the chat language filter optional.
  • More to come (when I'm awake)

Ross, I've looked everywhere and even read help, but unless I completely missed it, I cannot edit my profile.

Help!  I need access to this!

General Chat / Android Speed Tip
April 13, 2012, 12:56:20 AM MT
Is it my imagination or did there used to be a Hints and Tips topic on this site?

Anywho, when Ross first integrated Adobe Air (or was it Flash), my speed increased about 10 to 20% (average 7 fps) and I was very happy.  Most of the major lags were gone (or minimal) and the game was much more responsive.  Since my system barely ran the game in the first place, it was like a new game for me (until I can afford a real tablet, I am using a B&N Nook Color rooted with CM7).

I was wondering if I could squeeze a little more speed out of my system for HM, so I tried moving the app to internal memory.  The results are impressive!  I've gained another 20 to 30% fps increase, which is amazing.  Basically from when I first loaded the game, the fps has increased a total average of about 15 fps.  Most of the time I am now running between 30 and 41 fps (I thought there was a 40 fps cap).  It didn't take that much internal memory, either.  Even if it did, the trade off would be worth it.

I hope this helps someone increase their speed.  If you have any questions for me, feel free to ask.  If I discover any problems related to this tweak, I will post it here.

For completeness,  I think I should mention some of the system wide tweaks I use:

  • I run AutoKiller set to agressive
  • I use Autorun Manager as well and disable most unused startups
  • I overclock the processor to 1.2GHz

These are the main ones, anyway.  Have fun...

General Chat / Multiplayer Question
April 12, 2012, 09:35:37 PM MT
As I've stated elsewhere, as much as I like the game, I have yet to play against another person online; time restraints.  I also have not yet played against more than one team!

Things are finally starting to settle down for me (I think) and I am looking to start playing for real.  Unfortunately, I fear I have developed some bad habits.

Here is my main question:  How much time is usually given for a player's turn when playing against someone online?  While learning, I always set the time to unlimited.  I believe this is the worst habit I've developed.  This gave me time to learn what all the icons, cards, characters, etc., were for.

Also, is anyone willing to schedule some time with me to help me learn the multiplayer aspects, preferably during the day US time?  This would really be appreciated.

Suggestions & Comments / Suggestions for v1.7
April 10, 2012, 12:35:32 PM MT
Ross, you started the 'Bugs with v1.7' topic, so I thought it appropriate to have this companion topic.

  • Have the game remember custom party configurations (colors and all) between sessions.
  • The new icons in the main multiplayer chat screen have no help!  You really need to put popup help - at the least - on the icons, or words and icons (sorry, I know this was an intentional change, but it really is confusing). This is repeated from my bugs post.
  • Each forum should have an Archive topic for moving old posts into that are either old, outdated advice, or is now just simply wrong and therefore confusing to new users.
  • Have a button somewhere to clear single user statistics.
  • Player vs Player on the same device (re-listing this one).

I had more, but I can't remember them right now.

Suggestions & Comments / Auto-login
April 02, 2012, 06:50:35 PM MT
Ross,

Many sites now have auto-login, you may want to think about enabling that here, or adding it if the whole site is custom.

Suggestions & Comments / Android Behavior & More
March 22, 2012, 06:10:44 PM MT
With the Android app, on many screens and panels, there is no obvious way to back out.  In this situation I would normally press my tablet's "back" key (as I think most user would tend to do), but in HM this exits the game instead of dismissing the current panel or returning to the previous screen.  i.e. in Player Options under setting up a Custom Battle, the only way to back out is to hit accept, which is confusing and counterintuative.  I would suggest you add a Cancel or Back button to these panels and screens.

Meeting Place / Trasd is in the house!
March 20, 2012, 09:24:01 PM MT
Hey All,

I wanted to officially introduce myself to the community at large (Ross is probably already sick of hearing from me).

It may shock many of you to find that I have not yet purchased the app (I am, of course talking about the Android version Ross compiled), yet I have already joined the forum.  I realize Hero Mages is free to play, and there is a WEB based version, but I plan on playing this only on my tablet (and maybe occasionally on my PC).  I am still in the testing stages.  I will buy the app, but first I want to complete the tutorial and make sure everything runs fine (and I don't want to embarrass myself before I know how to play).

If you are using the Android app, please post your device specifics here; this is to help out potential new users and Ross.

OK, I guess I should say a little about myself!  I have been working with computers since before the first IBM PC came out in 1981 (I had a TI 99/4A before that that actually hooked to the TV and had a cassette tape recorder I rigged up as a hard drive).  I also started playing RPGs a few years prior to this, so yes, I am old.

Besides that, I live in Florida and I cannot spell.

The only other games I play online (there is no pen and paper group in my town and my efforts to start one have been futile) are DDO and LotRO.  I have been playing DDO for only a couple of years and am one of the founders of a very successful guild (both the other founder and myself have recently abdicated so we can "just play" and not worry about running the guild anymore, but the guild is still going strong and I still administrate the forums).  I have played LotRO for only a few months now and though it's hard for me to get used to, I am enjoying it very much.

I was specifically searching for a good turn-based strategy game in the Android Market when I ran across Hero Mages.  Though I like the two MMOs I do play, I dislike the hack-and-slay mentality.  Sometimes I just want to kick back, take my time, and use my brain (that's why I am looking at this program as strictly an Android app, I want to get away from the PC from time to time).

That should be enough to be getting on with, I hope to see everyone online (and give the old guy a break, help me learn).

Suggestions & Comments / Android Systems - A Device List
March 20, 2012, 03:31:02 PM MT
Before I decided to try Hero Mages on my android, I did a search in these forums to see if anyone with the same system as mine had any comments or words of wisdom that might prove beneficial.  No one did.

Since I found android posts scattered throughout this site, I thought it may help others if we consolidated some information and all listed the type of android device we are using, our basic experience running Hero Mages, and any android-specific notes or tips we'd like to share. I'll go first!

I am successfully running Hero Mages on a CM7 rooted Nook Color overclocked to 1.2GHz, my FPS varies between 20 (updated because of some changes, more later) at the low end and near 40 at the high end, but averaging about 28.  I am very happy with the performance on my tablet.  Here are my specifications:

Model-Nook Color
Android Version-2.3.7
Flavor-CM7 (CyanogenMod-7.1.0-encore)
CPU-ARMv7 rev 2 (v7)
Memory-480MB
