Title: Boast your Gaming Heritage
Post by: Ross Przybylski on July 25, 2009, 08:24:00 PM MT
What other games do you enjoy playing?

Personally, I am a big fan of miniature based table top games.  Hero Quest, by Milton Bradley, largely inspired Hero Mages, as well as table top war games like Warhammer Fantasy and 40,000.  I have 3 display cases full of miniatures in my basement- including 5 full 40K armies and 2 Fantasy armies, and over 100 fantasy Reaper figurines- so there was a lot of inspiration to work from.  I even own a 1000 piece MageKnight 3D dungeon!  I am also a fan of computer based stategy games (Dawn of War is my current favorite), team based FPS (BF2142 in particular), and Xbox (Halo and Oblivion are my top 2).

How about the rest of you?  (Comon, brag a little about your nerdiness)

I've always found myself particular to Strategy games (Command and Conquer, Dawn of War, Age of Empires), FPS (Halo series, Call of Duty Series), RPGs and JRPGs (Fable 2, Infinite Undiscovery, The Last Remnant, Eternal Sonata), and other games that fall into various categories.

I've recently expanded my repitore into the Japanese market as well, so I'm getting around ;P.  As for board games, I'm a fan of table-top strategy games such as Risk.  I too plan to start a Warhammer 40K army so that'd be fun having an army of little guys in my basement heh.

I'm always looking to expand my repitore!

I have been big in many different types of games:

Card games I dabbled in Poke'mon, YuGiOh, Dragonball Z, Magic in that order. This is the dragonball Z 1st gen from Score E. And I still have my Hercule Spirit Bomb deck, which went 37-0 at the card game shop I used to play at.

Also Video games, I have been big on MMORPG, rpg, and FPS games. I used to play WoW for a few years (Quit a few months ago) in the #1 guild on the server as the #1 shaman on the server, though the server wasn't that great. but hey it says for me to Boast ;).

I go back to basic DnD redbox and commadore 64 when floppy disks were 5 and a quarter inch big lol

Games like barbarian combat simulater, airborne ranger, tie fighter, original doom, wasteland - the game that spawned fallout series. Fallout tactics is an all time fave.

Played a lot of 40k, still have boxs of unpainted minis lol

Loved console games like lemmings, worms, 007, halo, cod, dawn of war, Toe jam and earl original version, and now heromage.

I consider myself a first generation video gamer :) having played the earliest all text video games and first consoles and home computers, so if we are bragging a little I helped pave the way to make it easier for you kids  ;)

oh yea cant forget games like magic, bloodbowl, heroquest, DnD, rifts,TMNT,shadowrun, mechwarrior.

Hi, all!

I play all types --  Warhammer 40K (I have a KILLER pink & purple Tyranid army that I took a very long time to paint!), The Sims for PC, HeroQuest, Diablo 2, Halo 1-3, old school Mario (I was the Princess always in SMB 2!), DDR (have my own elevated metal dance pads!), Gears of War, and, of course, HERO MAGES!

See you on the battlefield!

Hi all.  I got to play a demo at GenCon on Saturday afternoon.  It's a fun game.
Mostly I like to play board games like Arkham Horror, Robo Rally and such.  On the computer I play Lord of the Rings Online quite a bit and still play Starcraft quite a bit, for some reason that game just doesn't get old.

Yes Blizzard makes great games- I was hooked since Warcraft 2, and I'm sure you can sense the inspiration from war/Starcraft interface in Hero Mages.  Welcome to our community Parson1122, glad to have you with us!

Hi all, I'm fairly new around here. I originally started in RPGs: mainly Tunnels & Trolls, Runequest and Call of Cthulhu with a little bit of D&D, which I've started playing again a couple of years ago. I played a whole range of RPGs including Paranoia, Traveller, Bushido, Champions and even Bunnies & Burrows (google it ;)). I also used to play Warhammer Fansty Battle and 40k, but all that stopped a few years back when most of my gaming group scattered to different parts of the country.

Since then I've been concentrating on computer games, and thoroughly enjoy Everquest, Travian (\wave Tors), Hearts of Iron, Civilization (all versions except 3) and my all time favourite - Alpha Centauri. I also enjoy the old UFO series of games, particularly UFO Apocalypse.

I'm really enjoying Hero Mages, it's got a good balance of luck and skill is great fun. I think I'll be playing for a while.

If there is ever a moment in your life that you could go back in time and stop...it would be introducing tor to travian. God only knows how many hours that one 5 minute introduction consumed...

Hi, I saw Turkish (my son) introduced us in his separate post.  I enjoyed reading the posts in this chain since I am old enough to have been in the beginning of online gaming.  So, going back... Online Multiplayer Battletech.  In 1990 we paid by the hour to play a I think it was 16 color game but it might have been 4 color.  I don't even want to go into what that cost per month.  I was young enough that my reflexes still worked.  But I avoid FPS now because I just get dizzy.  I avoided Everquest but somehow not WOW.  I have started and quit so many times but it is entertaining and whiles away the hours harmlessly.  Besides, my guild loves me, I give away my stuff every time I quit. I also could not avoid Travian, but I have no fond memories of that game as essentially, in my opinion, to play it correctly you had to pick on the weak until they quit.

We mostly play card and board games and Turkish and I have gone to GenCon every year since 1990 and love to try and buy new things.  Our favorites right now are Camelot Legends and we just discover Dominion (as well as this game,)

See you all out there... and I do not mind buying some stuff as in cost per hours of entertainment it is cheap.  Just dont push me too far guys ;)

Thinking of picking up Champions next week. Of course there's magic, played some pokemon, even bought some Wyvern cards once, if anyone knows what that is.

FPS- Tribes 2, Halo, Max Payne 2, Battlefield 1942/Vietnam/2/2142, Combat Arms, Left 4 Dead, Tremulous, Thief, Dark Messiah of M&M, and Serious Sam

Adventure- Secret of Monkey Island (whole series is awesome), LOOM, Quest for Glory Series, Seme King's Quest

Halo 3, Frontlines, Fallout 3, Team Fortress 2, Civilization, Left 4 Dead, etc.

Board Games:

Warhammer 40k, Chess, Go, Hero Quest, Backgammon.

Well, I have done a LOTTTT of MMO's. I just copied this from another site that I posted on. Its a fansite for a game caled Lord of Ultima.
I used to play a game called Runescape. I played as an F2P until I got all the skills maxed out. Then I got bored and quit. :) Before I played that I played a game called Club Penguin. It was fun at first until Disney took it over. I also, for about a month, played a game called Chobots which was really weird. I played battlefield heroes, which I quit because of lag and I also sometimes play online matches of CoD. I also played a game called Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory which was basically like CoD only with classes and different weapons and maps. I also played a game called FusionFall, which at the time had F2P and P2P. I played the F2P and then quit when I maxed it out. Recently the game was made entirely free, so now I do play it. Whew, well I'm pretty sure thats all the online games I've played if you don't count LoU.

Well since I've been a gamer since I was young, there are more than a few:

Like my brother I played almost every card game under the sun: all the kiddie card games, Magic (with my unbeatable Zombie deck), DBZ, Warlord, basically any strategy card game.

I wasn't that big on computer games, but I did play a few of the Warcrafts. I'm amazing at mindsweeper, and my favorite, The Monkey Island series lol.

My brother and I had almost every gaming system, and we usually had most of the games for them. So video games are a check.

I play any type of board games but the two I like most are Chess and Risk. Anything that requires coming up with a strategy. Plus we played miniatures for a while, DnD minis, Mageknight, and the such.

Every gaming system! Do you have the NES, SNES, Sega, N64,etc? I'm an amateur old game system collector, I have a couple old systems, but not many. Old system wise I have 2 segas, an original and slightly newer one, a gamboy pocket along with Pokmen red, blue, and yellow and thats basically it. I'm still looking for the old nintendo game system's like the NES. I also have GBA, a Gamecube, a WII, a DS, and a DSI. You could also count my Ipod touch which I mainly use for gaming and my Mac book pro which I do some gaming and work on.

Looks like I'm among friends.  Lol.

For me it was a combo of board games, book rpgs, computer games, console games, table top games...

Looking back it started just by watching my family play monopoly when I was little believe it or not....they were SUPER competitive and had a ton of fun.  Made me die to get older and play.  Got into board games like Heroquest, Axis and Allies, Buck Rogers, Shogun (now known as Samurai Swords) etc.  My buddies, brother, and I even began splicing the games.  Using pieces from all of them and miscellaneous toys...giving the similar pieces like attributes...deciding on a board to use...making movement rules...and then battling eachother.  This game reminds me of those days.

At the same time my father was one of the few people in the neighborhood who always had a computer.  My brother and I drove him crazy always jumping on to play the text based fantasy game "Adventure."  Got a nintendo shortly after that and went wild there and on tons of consoles since.

And I saw a game called "DC Heroes" at a comic store....bought it for my brother for his bday (so I could play) and that began a LONG love affair with book rpgs....from there to D&D (Dad found out..said it was evil and made people commit suicide so banned us from playing it.....so we then played everything else but it), Palladium, TMNT, Rifts, Robotech, Stormbringer...etc.  GM'd half the time, then would switch so I could play.

It wasn't long after that till I got into table top games like Warhammmer Fantasy and Warhammer 40k.  Whew.

I also was an old MMORPG head.  Was part of the wave that was the trailblazer in "Ultima Online."  Wanted to play Everquest desperately but my comp wouldn't handle it...got to play it like twice and I thought that was a tragedy.  Then WoW came and I lost about 5 years of my life.  Had to give it up about 3 years ago.  But yeah...I'm like the rest of you :)

Great story Mornlord! Hero Quest was actually a huge inspiration for Hero Mages. In fact, the precursor to Hero Mages was a physical board game that focused on cooperative dungeon crawling and randomly generated monster battles. I'll have to dig up the old printed cards and share them on the forums.

My game experiences would include D&D which I started in playing in 1979 along with Starfleet Battles. Also your typical family board games Monopoly, Life ect.. Plus, Risk, Halo Risk, Axis and Allies, Dragon Dice, Samurai Swords, Magic the Gathering and Starfleet Battles PC game.  I recently got back into playing D&D which is still a blast to play. My wife bought me a tablet recently and that is how I discovered Hero Mages, which happens to be a fantastic game. So much so that I was able to get a few other guys in the fire department to get it. In our down time we can get a quick game in no matter which fire station we are at thanks to the cross platform concept. Thanks for a great game D20Studios. I have been waiting a long time for a game like this.

Thanks for sharing, Flux! My older brother who's also a fire fighter said something to me once: "I love playing games, but with my schedule, I don't have time to read an 80-page rule book. I just want to get together with friends, kill things, find it funny, and go home." It was this concept for which the game was created. So glad to hear you guys are enjoying Hero Mages!

I started gaming with D&D when it first came out.  My brother and I had read an article on it and were waiting for it to go on sale.

Several years ago, I was playing Neverwinter Nights on ALFA servers, but other than that, I've long since moved away from D&D.  I've moved on to games like V:tES, which I played regularly in the '90s and WoD games which I still play online via PbP (gotexp.com/d20 in case you are interested!)

The computer and android games I prefer are generally turn based strategy games and I regularly meet to play board games like Settlers of Catan, Citadels, Nightfall, Smallworld, etc.  And I'm currently trying to put together a group to do some TT roleplaying with the Vampire the Requiem or A Song of Ice and Fire RPG.

Whew!  What a geek!

Now I am starting to understand the average maturity level of the community - I too started with D&D when it first came out.  I still have the original (3 of the 4) game booklets and most of the entire 2nd edition publications.  AD&D has to be my all-time favorite game.  Back in the late '70's, we used a dry-erase map and miniatures when they came out.

My favorite computer games have to be NWN, NWN2, Morrowind, and Oblivion.  As far as board games, pretty much anything involving strategy.

I now spend most of my time on DDO and LotRO - not necessarily because they are my favorite games, but because of physical problems, they have become my vehicle to a social life!

Blimey where to begin.

Game playing since my earliest years - Chess, Scrabble, Monopoly were the three staples in our house.

1982 when into Games Workshop Manchester store - which was when they only had two stores! That changed my gaming life!

Basic then Expert DnD - now 4th edition with my children

ZX Spectrum in 1982 (a good year) and computer games from then on - what was the name of the DnD dungeon crawler - Eyes of something - dungeon of something?

Loved Car Wars - a virtually perfect game and crying out for a good computer version.

Games I've played for far too many hours...Doom, Doom 2, Command and Conquer (various), Jagged Alliance 2 (greatest computer game ever coded if you ask me), Heroes of Might and Magic 3 (possibly the second greatest computer game of all time)

Like to create my own board and card games - created one based on the TV show Alias using a Risk board and custom cards, dice and physical challenges against the clock!!

Drawn up dozens of sets of rules for different figure sets, micro tanks and created my own fantasy card game for my kids rather than bankrupt myself on Magic cards! That and it was fun to do.

Don't play computer MMO games due to not having enough time and I recognise my weakness for spending too long playing and not enough time sleeping! Hero Mages cost me two hours last night until my beloved wife said "You do know how late it is" in that tone of voice that says 'listen to me!'

In modern times I haven't played many computer games but the online flash game Monsters of Dread - which you can find at Kongregate or ArmorGames has taken up a few hours...

Nope, but I think Ross' question was about any type of game, not specifically video.

I started out by being introduced to RPGs by playing D&D back in the "1st Edition" days. Sadly I had to keep that a secret for years as one of my close friends in school had a mental disorder and he shot and killed another of our friends and the attorney used D&D as his basic defense.  :o So my mom would not let me play for years....

I loved video games of any type, sport, war games or D&D type games. I used to play a lot of Bards Tale as well.

Then as I got older and got my own gaming systems I tended towards FF series, Fable, Dragon Origins and the like.

Board games I love all sorts, we have a group that gets together once a year (2 guys live out of state) and we play board and card games all weekend long. We play games that are really strange and sometimes will buy a game we have never heard of just to try it out. We are all excited for HeroMages to come out as the board variant so that we can add it to our rotation!

I am loving HeroMages especially now that v1.8.0 has come out and I can play async games. I play so much more now than I did when I had to find time to be online, so again Ross THANKS for that! I am currently trying to get my son interested in HeroMages. I gave him my Kindle Fire last night and told him to install it so that he could check it out. I told him it would be a great game to kill time between classes at College. :)

I was just creeping around the forums and found this topic.

I started with chess and tons of other boardgames in the early 80s (Monopoly, Life, Mousetrap, The Elfquest Boardgame, Axis & Allies, Hero Quest etc.) and moved on to RPGs fairly quickly (Basic D&D, Star Frontiers, Champions, AD&D 1st and 2nd Editions, Marvel Superheroes, Rifts, Earth Dawn, I am sure there are others I am forgetting).

In that same timeframe, I played numerous computer games (Zork, Hi-res adventure, King's Quest series, Police Quest, Leisure Suit Larry, Hero's Quest/Quest for Glory, The Bard's Tale, Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Secret of the Silver Blades, Might and Magic II, Dragon Wars, Knights of Legend, Ultima VI and VII, Civilization, Baldur's Gate I and II, Fallout, NWN, City of Heroes, DDO).

I also owned the following console games: Odyssey2, Colecovision, Sega Master System, SNES, PS1, PS2.  My favorite titles in no particular order are Final Fantasy Tactics, Blast Chamber, Summoner 2, Street Fighter 2: Tourney Edition, River Raid, Tomb Raider, Legacy of Kain series.

Before video and computer games evolved, I wasted a fortune in quarters on the likes of Gauntlet, Ikari Warriors, Street Fighter 1 and 2, Spy Hunter, Afterburner, Crossbow, Final Fight, Double Dragon, Pac Man, Qbert, Dig Dug and countless other arcade games at the legion of locations my parents took me (usually arcades and malls, but occasionally bars, restaurants and grocery stores).

See you on the virtual field of battle...

I live near fantasy flight games game center in Roseville Minnesota. People play table top games from the minute they open until close. I play a lot of card games but never played miniatures or anything like that. I've wanted to but I am too OCD to paint the pieces etc. I've always stuck to card games like Magic the Gathering and the new LCG games by fantasy flight.

I've played about every mmorpg on PC and hundreds of RPG's on consoles. I play a few RTS games as well as MOBA's.

I like this idea of sharing gaming backgrounds...
My family liked classic board and card games, and an uncommon John Deere Agri Cup, this probably got me started.

As a young teen I loved game books (the series from Ian  Livingstone and Steve Jackson, the only I know that ever got published in France).
On the video game side we owned a Vectrex. The only non-pixel based home video game. It had stunning playability for the time! And it was still a favorite of my nephews not so long ago! Then I got my first computer, an Amstrad 64k loading games in about 15 mm minutes from a tape! Ziggy and Sorcery were favorites.

In high school I discovered book RPGs and fell for them: Call of Chtulhu, and the series based on Moorcock's books. It was a blast!
I also bought an Atari, and enjoyed games such as X-wing, Tie Fighter, North & South... At the time with friends we were dreaming of being able to play in groups, including for FPS. We didn't know it would come so fast. We waited playing for the arcade Double Dragons...

In engineering school I of course joined the gaming club (la guilde des stratèges), which I ended up managing. This was great: we had so many games to try, and always willing players at hand. One of the club favorites was Diplomacy by having one turn per week. Awesome! They usually were six of them going on in parallel. My other favorite board games were Res Publica and Blood Bowl, among many. Then the revolution of card games arrived with Magic: The Gathering. Some of the best moments of that era were with two friends who completely revamped the rules of the Middle Earth card game to make it an epic quest rather than a classic deck-building challenge. 20 hour games were commonplace... The other highlight was the  book RPG about Demons and Angels "In Nomine Satanis" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_Nomine_Satanis/Magna_Veritas), but you English speakers cannot enjoy how hilarious it is since the English translators decided to play it safe and took all the fun from it :(. Oh, and since boasting is allowed, I organized the first ever official Magic tournament in France.
On the video game side I finally got a PC, enjoyed Descent as my first network-based multiplayer game, Doom as the first real FPS, and Lucasfilm adventure games. Day of the Tentacle dates from these days as well, but strangely I only played it way later. It cannot get old anyway! Another that never gets old is Starcraft. Last year I got my nephew (alas Trucetrange) hooked to it! And in turn he of course introduced me Later to Starcraft 2...

Since then I veered to different kinds of card or board games that I would play with my wife (Guillotine, Carcassonne...), plus the occasional PC game. I never liked MMORPGs. I would rather play strategy games (Heroes of Might & Magic 3, Praetorians, Dominions, Company of Heroes, Starcraft). Or games that have a good scenario (I liked Dark Messiah of M&M for instance).

And now Hero Mages of course!
I hope to get the community going, because I feel this game is likely to be a favorite of mine for quite some time. Meet you all soon on the battlefield!

Hey Scribe if you like RPG games Dungeon and Dragons is an option and I also really recommend the dragonlance seiries as well as Shanara books by Terry brooks if you haven't played or read them. By the way being a big magic player myself just out of curiosity what's your favorite deck you've made mines a more recent one featuring several somberwald sages and karametras acolytes to play Colossus of akros on turn five and make him monstrous on turn six. Abhor its such a good feeling when it works. Cya around.

Hi Cragalanche,
Thanks for the suggestions. I actually don't play Magic any longer (and never was a top notch player anyway). I organized that tournament mostly for the benefit of our local gaming community, so that my fellow Magic fans had new challengers to play with, and to boost prestige of our club.  The winner of the tournament actually joined our engineering school (and gaming club of course) later on  ;)
