Background Story Edit Request

Ross, I was wondering if I could re-write/ add on to your background story. I like the basic ethics and details to it, but as a professional writer (as a side job/hobby) I would like to add to it. It could be longer and it could appear to be given more descriptive backgrounds to each Mage. And it could be more focused on the result the Emperor came up with for his Hero Mage. I know it's all in the tutorial, but if I wanted to, I could create a 5 page long (typed font 12) story out of that bit you put online... I don't mean ANY offense, but I kind of see it as a challenge, as it would be the second story I edit, I usually only write my own. It would also give me something interesting to do. It's a request, I won't be mad or offended if you say no, I just kind of thought this could help me towards my dream career :) Thanks, Kevin

One of the bullet point items on the feature list is "Forge the story of Papillion by battling as your favorite mage and sharing your ideas with the Hero Mages community".

By all means, I'm open to your ideas and I even have a dedicated community resources page in the Community section where we can post it.

There has been high demand for single-player campaign and I would be delighted to see the community engaged in the story telling process.

Alright, I'll get the whole thing to you by Tuesday at noon :)

This is my starting idea for the Emperor. I am going to do one for each Mage...

Cosme sat on his throne, stunned, shocked, horrified. Eyes wide, he stared at the white marble ceiling of his palace. HIS palace, in HIS empire, in HIS land. He had ruled this land for decades, with peace and a New Golden Age. Flashes of images sparked in his mind as he imagined what was coming; war. HIS lands, burned and charred; HIS people dead, bodies no longer even recognizable; HIS city, palace mere ruins. All he saw was chaos, caused by cursed magic.

The images died as he looked down at the page boy, merely 13 years of age, who stood there expectantly. “Go tell the Empress and the rest of the Council that I request, no not request, require, them to meet me in the council room in one hour. That will be all.” As the page hurried away, the Emperor saddened as he realized that this would be one of the last times they met the page would ever be of service to him. His mind wondered off once again, but this time concern was not at the forefront of his mind.

What if the rumors are true? he thought, What if all is already lost? Rumors had reached his ears, this new prophecy, this new Mage, the stirring of war. He had always been aware of the Academy of the Arcane Arts to the east and the Elven Kingdom to the west, but now they moved, against HIM; against HIS peace and HIS people. They had never been bold, never so audacious. Would his own people turn against him out of fear? He did not know.

Despite his years of experience as ruler, the Emperor was not immune to the widespread panic. It was difficult to know what the outcome would be as peace and quiet living were all that his people had known for so long. There is no longer peace, there is only war, he thought, and I must act quickly. Springing from his throne, he went around his palace barking orders, commands, even the occasional request from his servants and military officers. He finally reached the Council room, overheated and quick to anger.

He ignored requests to talk with individuals, quickly sitting everyone down and making all verbal activity come to a halt. Once all of the nobles were seated, he stood, pushing his chair back, and putting both hands on the table. His voice loud for all to hear, he proclaimed “We are doomed.”

^ Was supposed to say: As the page hurried away, the Emperor saddened as he realized that this would be one of the last times the page would be of service to him.

I find that sometimes Ross is quite busy and doesn't always have a chance to respond.  But, I am (slowly) working on the game's User's Guide (here), so when I get a chance, I will read over your post and see if I can incorporate any (or all) of it into the manual (and the changes I am making).

I am looking forward to backgrounds on all the mages.

More ideas?  Keep them coming, but if possible, try to post them in the link I published....

Thanks MM, I've been hoping for more community input.

I will help in any way I can. Though I can only currently put up the FM background. The Wiz and Summ backgrounds rely on knowledge about the recovery-based mage. If you need more support, I'll round up some people. Thanks for helping me too. HAS ANYONE READ MY NEW BACKGROUND STORY YET FOR THE EMPEROR?

Ross Przybylski

Magic this is excellent. What I'd like to do in the short-term is incorporate this into a new community section for fan-driven story line.

Eventually, there may be opportunity to develop some of the story line into quests. I am considering the possibility of a kickstarter campaign for a single player incarnation of Hero Mages once I've completed v1.8.0. I think it could be an interesting experiment to open up the game for community contribution.

MM, it seems that we will be keeping our work separate, but if you are done before me, I will be using some of your stuff, probably....

So, don't worry about sending me anything for the User's Guide.

Also note that existing background story content is not necessarily being replaced. Community based content will be an additional resource designed to enhance and develop the world of Papillion.

Alright. Thanks. I am wondering something though... Do you want me to start a new Topic for this where people could combine all their ideas for this? BTW thanks guys for the support. I wish my story could have been better :(

Where did you get the idea your story wasn't good. No one said your story wasn't good, in fact, I think it's great!

I don't know... I just read it over and all of a sudden I felt it was bad... but thanks :)

I worked with Ross a long time ago on the story, but I don't think he even really looked at or got the story line. A semi-professional writer and I came up with a great background if anyone's interested in checking it out.
