Bugs & Support / Game won... but lost!! Weird bug
August 07, 2014, 09:03:30 PM MT
Hi Ross,

Please see game #81420.
It started as an offline mage duel against Mastermind762, but we happened to meet online and finish it.
Towards the end of the game the other mage was alone and had two HP left. I then cast 2 skeletons. I moved the the first one onto the mage and dealt him 1 damage. I moved the second one, attacked, and dealt another damage, killing the opponent mage, a clear victory.
But at this instant the game froze on me. After several attempts, I managed to get back on, only to discover that the game didn't end! I found the other player waiting for me, and with only the first of my skeletons moved! I tried the same move again, but this time the opponent survived the attack, and subsequently defeated me.

I'm confused by this bug. How is it even possible when all the moves are allegedly managed from a log?
Is it that the moves are performed locally, then queued for logging on the server? I could see a rationale for this for performance, instead of having the server perform these operations. But this would be a door for this kind of bug, or even potential exploits.
Anyway, apart from my random guesses above, the conclusion is similar to the one in this earlier bug report: sometimes both players don't see the same events at each end of a live game.
Kind of annoying for a live game...

Thanks

Hi Crag,
I'm back as well, after having been off a bit on vacation. It may be part of the explanation at this time of the year.

Hi Lordlandon!
Welcome to the game!  You'll see, this is a very addictive game: simple to understand but hard to master as they say, and very enjoyable...
The community isn't as big as it deserves in my opinion, so we're trying to have quality make up for quantity ;-) I can say that because I'm still fairly new, and very pleased with the spirit I found here with more seasoned players.
Feel free to ask if you need a bit of coaching to get the best from the game. There is a good thread with tips in the "Strategy & Tactics" section of the forum. Otherwise I strongly recommend practicing a lot against the computer (start a live game, with one or several computers as opponents/team mates). Please note that you can quit those and resume them anytime, despite their being named "live".
Enjoy!

The other day Cragalanche and I were trying to set up a cooperative game against AIs. The game froze on his side, but not on mine! Leaving the game, trying to drop or surrender wouldn't unfreeze it.
So we abandoned the game, started a new one, and this time it was my turn to get frozen, while the game still ran on his side!
Chat was still functional, that's how we discovered this. Unfortunately i didn't record game numbers before they dropped off my game list.

CONCLUSION: what we experience as "game freeze" is (at least sometimes) not the game itself getting stuck, but a player not being able to interact with the game any longer. Hopefully this will help investigations.

Leaderboards, game list and player stats are all significantly faster. Thumbs up, Ross!

Crag,

There must be a typo in the times you posted. 2 PM CST means 9 PM in Western Europe, not 9 AM.
It's not a problem for me, but I wanted to clarify for anybody else in that time zone.

Thanks

I just meant that one day I'm sure I'll be part of your 1000 games Club. Clearly not as soon as you. Especially since lately we've been playing often together!

#79845 is another example. The log shows that Digital's turn ended, but mine never is not initiated.  :'(

Yes, that's what I mean. I discovered the game only recently.  I love the game, and what I read from the community on this forum makes me want to be part of it, too. So I'm wondering what drove some of the most frequent players away. The question is open to anybody in that situation, really.

My experience is limited, but I agree. All my games on this map were decided by the end of turn 1. Maybe impressive but not really fun. It's not balanced enough to be interesting.
